The Yankees got shut out again today, this time losing 7-0 to Oakland. Man, I hate the A's. All their players are so ugly, too. Well, A-Rod is eight homeruns away from 500. I don't know why this hasn't been hyped more than it has. Go Alex!
Cleveland played Tampa Bay again tonight. The Devilrays' pitching leads the league in strikeouts but has the worst ERA. Go figure. Anyway, it was Grady Sizemore bobble head night. I'm really bummed I missed that. Grady hit an RBI single and a two-run double. C.C. Sabathia gets his twelfth win of the season. He's doing great.
The Mets beat Philadelphia 8-3. Carlos Beltran hit two homeruns. He also hit two homeruns yesterday against the Phillies. Last season Beltran hit 2 homeruns in 2 consecutive games, as well. Interesting. Go Carlos!
Barry Bonds hit his 750th homerun yesterday. I'm so happy for him.

My summer plans
I still miss my time at the zoo, but I have a very busy summer left. Next week I'm travelling up to Sonoma for a couple of weeks to spend time with my grandparents. My grandma is letting me work at her gift shop every day and I'm really excited. I've never had a job before. So I'm nervous, too. I'd like to work at the Sanrio store in the mall when school starts again. I just love Hello Kitty. Now I'll have some work experience to put on the application. Yay!
My grandparents have a brown standard poodle named Jack. He's gone crazy. Well, he's always been crazy, but recently he's been really wild. Really wild. Luckily he's gonna start some obedience training soon. Hopefully that will calm him some. The last time I went up to Sonoma Jack was jumping and biting all over the place. He's impossible to calm. He is extremely cute, though.
I just noticed I really can't type. I do the hunt and peck thing still and it drives my mom crazy. Anyway, spell check is my friend.
Well, after I come home from Sonoma, my grandma, my mom, my sister, and I are attending this past season's version of the American Idol Concert in San Jose. My mom and I have been going to this concert for the last couple of years. Yes, we are dorks. But happy dorks. Everyone always sounds great at these things, even the contestants that didn't sound so great on the show. The top ten all tour together, so that means Sanjaya will be at this year's concert. I don't know if you watch American Idol, but it is impossible to describe how incredibly bad and frustrating this seventeen year old was on the show. He pretty much ruined it for the last few weeks he was on. Plus there was the whole votefortheworst.com "scandal." Ridiculous. I don't know if some people really voted for Sanjaya to sabotage the show or if some people actually liked Sanjaya. Either way, it's ridiculous. The only interesting thing about him was his maniacal hairstyles, and even they were overrated. Oh, well. I'll try to sit through his part at the concert.
The day after the concert, my mom and I are driving to Sea Ranch, a wonderful little community of rental houses right on the beach in northern California. We go every year but missed it last summer, so we are really looking forward to this. It'll be two weeks of no obligations. It's gonna be terrific. This year my little sister's not coming, so we won't have to hear stupid cartoons all day or whining about going to the beach. She actually hates the beach. A couple of years ago she fell into the water and ever since she's really been adverse to going. Her loss.
After that my mom and I are going to see Jersey Boys in San Francisco. My dad's mom went to see it with friends earlier in the year and I jokingly asked her to give us the tickets if her friends couldn't make it. Just a joke. Well, it turned out that her friends did go see it with her, but she bought us tickets for a later showing, anyway. Yeah, vintage Betty. It'll be fun, though.
So that's my summer. Busy. But fun. This year will be the first time in a long time, or maybe ever, that I won't be visiting my grandparents in Arizona. I can't say I'm all that sad, however. I feel horrible for it. But I always feel like I disappoint them somehow whenever I go. It's a strange feeling that I can't quite articulate, so I won't try to. I really hope they're not reading this.
Now I'm off to watch the Yankees, who are down 0-2 to the A's right now. Hopefully they'll pull off a win.

Wins
It was a good day for my teams.
The Mets played a double header against Philiadelphia. They won the first game 6-5 and Maine got his ninth win of the season in game two (5-2).
Mariano Rivera did a great job in the ninth inning to help The Yankees beat Oakland 2-1. I'm glad he's doing well now; he got off to a horrible start.
Cleveland also won, beating Tampa Bay 2-1. I didn't get a chance to see the game.

Tigers!
Ok, today was great.
We spent the morning finishing our paper mache giraffe. He ended up pretty cool, except someone painted two rows of pointed teeth on its head. A carnivorous giraffe. Stupid. Anyway, his spots turned out nicely and we finally got his toilet paper roll tail to stick on. It stood on its own, too.
So then it was time to "feed" it to the tigers. We got lucky here. Really lucky. The tiger keeper let us enter the tigers' exhibit and place our giraffe right in the center. Of course the tigers were locked inside their night den while we were doing this, but it was the most incredible thing. I noticed they don't have a whole lot of space, but there are only two. I'm sure its enough. Anyway, we raced up to a deck where could view the tigers from and the keeper let them out. They weren't too impressed by our giraffe. One of the tigers sniffed it a bit and knocked it down, but then she left it alone. Oh, well. She'll like it when she's hungry because there is hamburger inside.
Well, Zoo Camp is over. I'm sad but glad that I don't have to make that stupid drive to Oakland anymore. Driving really stresses me out.
Animals are really awesome things. If you haven't been to a zoo in a while, you should go as soon as possible. Really. It's humbling. My only word of caution is to avoid the chimpanzees and gorillas. Seeing them at a zoo is not fun. You can really see the emotion on a chimp's face and it's rarely a pleasant one.
I know I'll probably never have these opportunities again so I will remember them for a long, long time. And I didn't suffer any bodily harm. That's a plus.

Games
The Mets game against the Cardinals has been postponed due to rain.
The Yankees were down 4-6 to Baltimore in the seventh inning. After a short rain delay the Yankees tacked on another four runs to make it 8-6 in the eighth. The game's been suspended now due to rain, however. But what a comeback.
Cleveland won today 4-3 over the A's. Jason Michaels hit a three-run homerun and Grady Sizemore hit an RBI double. Go Grady!

Lemurs!
Today was the best day of Zoo Camp so far.
We started out by observing the fruit bats. They were all hanging upside down from layers of netting, some with their wings wrapped around their bodies and some with their wings stretched out lazily. One started chasing another, both climbing awkwardly along the netting. It was really funny.
Next we got to enter the lemur enclosure. Our project was to pull weeds. There were so many that when we were finished it looked like we'd hardly made a dent, but the zoo keeper said it looked "fabulous." Sure.
Anyway, the lemurs came right up to us, curious as can be. I guess they got a kick out of watching us. After the weeds were pulled the keeper took us up on a ledge where the lemurs were hanging out. She gave us each a handful of grapes and a slice of a banana, and the lemurs took the food straight out of our hands. One even grabbed my hand and brought it to his mouth so he get the grape. It was the coolest thing. They really do seem just like cats, but they are actually primates. I wished I had my camera with me.
Next up were the tortoises. There were three of them and the oldest was over one hundred years old. Apparently they're little hams and love attention. To wash them we just used an old rag and a bucket of water. While we washed them we gave their necks a massage. It seems to calm them. Man, their skin is amazing. It felt like old leather and you could really feel the muscles in their neck and shoulders. Really amazing. Well, one just wouldn't stand still for us and he almost bulldozed one of the kids. They'll walk right over anything. Apparently one broke the sink in a workroom once just by walking into it. After we dried them off, we rubbed mineral oil onto their shells and made them nice and shiny. It was pretty cool.
We worked with the turtles in a back part of the zoo, not in their exhibit. So next to their enclosure were a couple of wallabies and an emu. It was nice to see them because I can never spot them in the regular Australia exhibit.
Well, in early June I took two SAT subject tests, literature and chemistry. Today I got the scores back. They were ok, but not great. Hopefully I'll do a little better on the regular SAT in September. I also took the ACT test in early June but I haven't gotten the scores for that yet. I think I did pretty well, though.
Tomorrow is supposed to be a mellow day at the zoo. We're almost finished with our paper mache giraffe, but his neck is having trouble staying put. Hopefully when it dries fully it'll be more stable. It's gonna get destroyed tomorrow anyway. We're also gonna take the "sky ride." You sit on a little bench that moves along a cable way up over the whole zoo. I'm not exactly looking forward to it since I have a terrible fear of heights. Oh, well. We'll see.
So now I'm going to relax.

Results
The Orioles shut out the Yankees tonight, 4-0. Roger Clemens gets the loss. I'm really worried about him. He doesn't seem to be answering the call. Oh, well. Pitching has been a struggle for the Yankees all year.
Cleveland lost 13-7 to the A's. The Indians hit four homeruns and Oakland hit three. Oakland scored 9 runs in two innings. Boo.
Well, the Mets were ahead 2-0 over St. Louis into the sixth inning but the rain was coming down hard. So the Mets get the win.
I forgot to mention the meerkats in my previous post. They are so cute! The way they dig in the ground and watch the airplanes - so cute.

More Zoo Camp
Well, the lemurs will be tomorrow, not today. So I'll be looking forward to that.
But today was great. We started out pulling weeds, but in return we got to feed the giraffes. It was sort of like feeding horses. You grab a handful of oats and scoop it between the giraffe's lips, then he sticks out his long black tongue and leaves your hand sticky with saliva. Their tongues were sort of rough, almost like a cat's tongue. There were a couple of pushy males that butted their heads in whenever I tried to feed the smaller ones squished in the back. I took a couple pictures so hopefully they'll turn out well.
Next on the agenda was the otters. Man, they are cute. They have the funniest way of walking, too. We hid little pieces of dog kibble and fish in various places in their enclosure, and we stuck an open bottle of goldfish into the otters' pond. Then we got to watch them run out from their den and go crazy finding all of the food. It was great.
In the afternoon we started what's called an "enrichment project." Basically we made toys for the animals. Right now we're working on a large paper mache giraffe that we'll stick in the lions' area. I'm not sure it's really paper mache since all we're doing is sticking strips of newspaper onto a cardboard box, but the lions should have fun tearing it up.
The hyenas were out today, too. They've got to be the ugliest, scariest looking animals at the zoo. Or in the world. Man. One was pacing back in forth with a bone in his mouth, while the female was nuzzling a big red ball. She was so big that she looked more like a bear than anything else. The male gave us a couple of dirty looks; it might have been close to their feeding time.
Ok, so tomorrow is the lemurs. For some reason I'm really excited about this. Today we saw a couple of zoo keepers feeding grapes to the lemurs and it was the cutest thing. They're not shy at all. They also like to smack each other. It's really funny. They sort of remind me of my cat Bernie because he has a tail striped and colored like a lemur's. I took some pictures of them, too.
So that was my day. Now I'm going to relax since I feel tired as heck.

Well, the Yankees really blew it tonight. Or I should say Proctor really blew it. The bases were loaded in the bottom of the ninth and he threw four balls to walk in a run. It's really the saddest way to lose a game. Against the worst team in baseball, the Orioles. Please.
The Mets didn't fare much better against the Cardinals. It looked like it was going to be up to Shawn Green again in the bottom of the ninth with two out. He hit a wicked walk-off home run last night but he walked tonight. Next up was Jose Valentine and he hit a triple to score Shawn Green. The game is now tied 3 to 3. Then in the top of the eleventh Ryan of the Cardinals hit his first major league home run. Boo. Poor Valentin made a stupid fielding error and allowed another run to score. So the Mets lose 5 to 3.
Thank goodness Cleveland was great tonight. The A's were ahead in the ninth when Hafner hit a two-run double to tie the game. Then good ole Kelly Shoppach hit a great three-run walk-off homerun to win. Yay! Apparently Grady Sizemore hit a home run tonight but I missed it. That happened the other day, too. Go Cleveland!

Zoo Camp
I'm in a program right now through the Oakland Zoo called Zoo Camp. I found it under "volunteer opportunities" on the Oakland Zoo website and thought it would entail manual labor of some kind, like shoveling elephant poop. But it actually is a neat sort of summer camp for teens that lets you do cool stuff with the animals.
On Monday my camp group took a general tour of zoo, our first stop being the lions' area. Our day starts an hour before the zoo opens and apparently a lot of the animals love to come out when there aren't many people around. So the lions were laying around in plain site (usually they're back amongst the trees). I don't know if you've ever heard a lion roar, but it is, I swear, the most terrifying sound I have ever heard. It's so deep and guttural that it sounds like its starting from down in the lion's stomach. The lions are actually pretty cute, though. They lick their lips and suck on their toes just like my cats at home do.
Anyway, today we took a three mile hike along a ridge that overlooks Oakland. From the top I could see the big red McAfee sign where the Coliseum is (the baseball field). Pretty cool. It was warm for about an hour or so but the wind picked up and the air got cold. I wished I had my jeans on instead of my stupid shorts. I also think I got a million mosquito bites and a couple of brushes with poison oak. Oh, well. It was fun.
We got to see a great horned owl (is it capitalized?) demonstration later. Her name was Olivia and she was beautiful. Except when she looks straight at you - then she's pretty chilling. I was surprised to learn that she weighs only two pounds, but I guess it makes sense since she's all feathers. I also found out that an owl's ears are asymmetrical. One is in line with her eye and the other is down by her mouth. Apparently it really fine tunes her hearing. Pretty interesting.
Well, tomorrow will be cool. We're gonna feed some giraffes and watch the alligators get fed. We'll also put out food for the river otters. I guess it's not "safe" to be out with the otters because they have a pretty powerful bite. The best part, though, will be when we clean out the lemurs' area. We'll do some "weeding and feeding" over there. It'll be fun to hand-feed them.
Thursday we get to wash and oil the tortoises. Yes, wash and oil them. I'm not sure exactly what that entails, but I will report back. Heh.
Well, that was my day. I have some ball games on right now but I'm not really paying attention. I'm writing this instead.

The Mets beat the Cardinals tonight in dramatic fashion. The two were tied 1 to 1 up to the bottom of the eleventh inning when Shawn Green hit a walk-off home run straight out over center field. Right now they are in first place in the National League East, 3 games ahead of Philadelphia and 4 games ahead of the hated Braves. The Braves are in a terrible slump right now - they've scored something like one run in their last 5 games. Ouch.
Cleveland won, too - 5 to 2 over the A's. Cleveland is one game behind the first place Tigers in the American League Central. Come on, you guys. Just keep it up.
By the way, that nice-looking baseball player in my header is Grady Sizemore. He plays for the Indians and I absolutely love him. He's a great player, makes lots of nice catches out in center field.

First post
Well, this is my first post on my new blog. I finally made one. My Nono jokingly suggested that I make one and it occurred to me that I really should. We'll see how it goes.
Anyway, I'll just be posting info on, as my blog title says, life and baseball. I love baseball and life is ok. I follow the Cleveland Indians, New York Yankees, and the New York Mets. Because I live in the San Francisco Bay Area I also support the Giants, though I don't follow them religiously. So be expecting updates.
So I will post daily unless I don't have access to the Internet (if I'm on vacation or something).
