Whoah!

I just saw something really cool on the news!

President Bush came to the Bay Area today to meet with two high school seniors. One of them, Kevin Laue, was one of my good friends from middle school. He plays basketball, even though he only has one arm. I guess the president was inspired by that....

I know someone who met the president!

Frustrating day

Today was, I guess, a bad day.

I had purchased a parking permit online on January 9th, but apparently the transaction didn't go through. It was supposed to come in the mail, but it never came. So I went in to the office today and asked why the permit was taking so long to get to me. I had printed out a temporary permit the day I bought the real one, but it expired last week.

The office printed out a receipt that showed I had purchased the ticket and had me go to the security building. So I went there. The guy I met was extremely annoying. He said the receipt didn't prove that I had paid thirty dollars (price of parking permit). Even though it says that I was "charged" thirty dollars for it.

Now he starts thinking that I'm trying to scam him. Moron.

He told me to get a bank statement to prove that I spent thirty dollars on January 9th. My mom did this and she didn't find any payment of thirty dollars on that day. So even though the website told me I had purchased a parking permit, their system failed, just for me of course, and didn't put the payment through.

So now I have to pay extra money on daily parking permits and I have to buy the semester permit again. I have to keep doing this until it comes in the mail, if it ever comes in the mail.

I don't know why, but this makes me very angry. And the guy that I talked to at the security officer was a total moron. He was very rude to me. He didn't believe me at all. Idiot.

What did that receipt mean? It says that I paid thirty dollars. How does the computer know it charged me thirty dollars if the payment didn't go through?

-----

Anyway.....

There's a really annoying person in my math class.

There's always that one guy who likes to show off his pseudo math knowledge. He will constantly interrupt the lecture to ask some obscure, esoteric question that he really doesn't understand. Of course the teacher doesn't know what the heck that guy's talking about either.

One of the examples given in class today involved baseball teams and the cities they represent. The NY Mets were one of the teams. Then this same guy said in his thin, girly, arrogant voice, "If you can call the Mets a baseball team." Moron. You don't know anything about baseball and you don't anything about math. So shutup..... I feel very passionately.

Sorry. I just had to vent.

Gah. Sometimes you have those days.

One piece of good news. I picked up a book I had bought that was on back order.

And I was never contacted by the Earth Club president, like the advisers told me would happen. I hate system failure! Why me?

Ouch!

Today it rained in Oakland. But I went outside anyway and cleaned out the goat barn's outdoor patio.

Someone is coming tomorrow to inspect the zoo. I guess they want to make sure it's still a good one. So all the keepers were instructed to put out enrichment for their animals so that they look like they're having fun.

For the lemurs Alan had me stuff strips of paper into small cardboard boxes, and then throw in a handful of cranberry chewy things. Then I had to cut little holes on the outside of the box so the lemurs could stick their hands into it and search around for the treats.

While I was cutting I sliced my thumb pretty bad with the knife. I started bleeding all over the place. But it's not bleeding now.

Then I went up to the lemurs by myself and fed them some apples and grapes. They were doing their usual thing, and I hand fed some of them just because I like it when they touch my hand. Heh.

Ok, so my mom and I have been watching hours and hours of the Australian Open coverage every day. We taped a semifinal match between Roger Federer and number 3 Novak Djokovic. We were really looking forward to this match. But at the zoo Alan was listening to sports radio and I heard the outcome of the match. Bummer.

But OMG!!! Federer lost in straight sets!! His streak of like ten straight grand slam finals is over.

Anyway, that was my day. I hope you had a good one!

First week

So I forgot to post about my history class yesterday.

The teacher also works as a curator at some museum, I forget which one. She says she loves history and that it's her absolute favorite thing in the world. I guess it's good to have a teacher that's enthusiastic.

The class is three hours long, and most of it is lecture. We will also watch a lot of movies and History Channel specials. I only go once a week.

There is a large reading assignment every week. But for some reason I like reading things and taking notes. I'm not the kind of eternally bored student that gets a kick out of lame cutesy games and group work. That's what really bugged me about high school. My favorite classes involve lecture and note-taking. Most teachers assume kids think this is "boring" and try to teach in stupid ways that only set up opportunities for embarrassment. But no more of that.

Anyway, I am feeling good right now, even though this post seems kinda negative.

Today I went to English and math. Both classes involve an extra hour a week of lab work that you do on your own time. I mean you can do it whenever you want as long as you get fifteen hours done by the end of the semester.

You do these labs at the Integrated Learning Center (ILC). I haven't done them yet, and I have no idea how to do them. I asked my math teacher how this whole ILC thingy works, and he said that you pick up an assignment form a large filing cabinet. You find your teacher's name and pull it from their folder. Then you have to log-in to ILC so the computer knows you were there for an hour. I'm still sorta confused. But I'm going in on Monday to try it out.

So... I got to sleep in today because my first class doesn't start til 2:30. Nice!

I also forgot that I'm going to the zoo tomorrow. Heh. Friday will be the day I actually get up the earliest.

I have a lot of down time during the week to study and do homework, so over the weekend I can have do-nothing days. Yay!

ASL

I am home from my morning class, American Sign Language.

It's a total immersion class. So there is literally no talking the entire period. It's so weird. But I like it a lot. No loud, obnoxious people.

The teacher, Mr. Copra, is really funny. He likes to "say" funny things, and of course laughter is allowed in class.

Today I learned "I, you, read, and, write, same as," and some other things I forget. But it's not like you can write down the signs. So it's really difficult to remember how to do them.

Later today I have US History. I've always liked American history. I took it in the eighth grade and also as junior. So I know a lot of it already. But this class is required to transfer.

Oh, yeah. I also stumbled upon the student clubs link on the school website. I found the Environmental Club and I e-mailed the advisor asking where/when it meets. That would be a really cool way to meet people with similar interests, don't you think? I think so. So I am excited about that.

Anyway, I hope you all are having a good day!

Oh dear

I just learned that the actor Heath Ledger died.

He was in that movie Brokeback Mountain, which I never saw, but heard it was good.

He's also the Joker in the upcoming new Batman movie. And he had a young daughter. How sad.

Home

Well, I'm finally home again. It's 8:00.

Today was good. I only really talked to one person. Her name is Jenny. When I was waiting in front of my English class, she came up and said, "HI I'M JENNY, WHAT'S YOUR NAME?????"

Then in class she couldn't stop talking to the teacher. She just would not stop. But she's nice. She's majoring in nursing.

The teacher, Ms. Korber, was really nice. She used to be a lawyer. She's light years better than Mrs. Bradley, remember her? Ms. Korber had us interview the person next to us and find out things like what their goals are. I paired up with Jenny. I actually had the most interesting introduction. Everyone was like "I don't know, I don't care, undeclared." Then Jenny was like, "she's gonna transfer to UC San Diego and get a degree in zoology, and she's working at the zoo, and she wants to intern at the San Diego Wild Animal Park, and......." It was almost embarrassing. But oh, well.

I had an hour after that class before the next class started. So I found the cafeteria and bought a little yogurt cup. Then I realized they didn't have any spoons, so I just threw it away.

Math was good. It's two hours long, so we had a ten minute break at 6:00. The teacher is an old man, and he constantly makes little mistakes when writing on the board. But he would just laugh, and everyone would laugh at him. He's really nice anyway.

So... tomorrow I have ASL at 9:30 am. Then I have US History at 4:00. I will come home between classes.

-----

Ya know, I'm a little disappointed with the selection here. Of people I mean. Everyone seems like they really don't want to be there. Isn't anyone in the same situation as me? Or is my situation too unusual? I mean, I'm a good student, and I like being in class, so long as the teacher isn't a moron. But you know what I mean? School is extremely important to me. But the kids there seem to not feel that way. I don't know. I'm sure I'll find someone who actually likes the "learning experience."

On a scale of 1 to 10, a seven. My teachers are good, but the kids seem to be on a different wavelength than me. Like I said before, I'm sure I'll find someone who understands me.

Yikes!

Ok, so I leave for my first class in an hour.

I just got back from a visit with Michael (therapist.) He helped my nerves subside. Now I am ready.
I'll tell you all about it when I get home at 7:45 ish.

Ahh!

Tomorrow is the first day of school....

I'm VERY nervous. But I am also happy that it's finally happening.

I sorted out all my books and supplies. I have a different bag for each class, instead of one huge backpack.

I also picked out what I'm going to wear. That is one less thing to worry about tomorrow.

Also, Clinton won in Nevada. I think McCain won in South Carolina. And that Huck-a-moron is out of options actually. He won't get the nomination.

Do you know how much I HATE Mike Huckabee? I hate everything he believes in. There's no way he will be the next president.

I still don't know who I will vote for. Either Obama or Clinton. Most people I know like Obama.

Anyway, today was a good day at the zoo. I cleaned out the birds' cages this time. The kookaburra is kind of scary looking. They have enormous pointed beaks that could easily poke your eyes out if they so desired.

Books

Today I picked up my textbooks at Las Po.

I had ordered them online yesterday. I went in yesterday to try and pick them up, but of course the order wasn't confirmed yet.

The people at the bookstore had already sorted out the books and put them into bags for easy pick up.

For English we will be reading Stranger Than Fiction, which was made into a movie last year. It was a very good movie.

Smart turkeys

Oh yeah...

I forgot to mention....

Today the tiger exhibit was closed. They're working on raising the wall to the enclosure....

So Alan went and got a bunch of bamboo form the tiger exhibit and brought it over to the goats.

I guess they really got scared when the whole SF zoo tiger attack happened. But I thought our tiger exhibit was pretty good... It's basically a big pit. I'll take pictures of it next week.
Also, one of the older goats, Heidi, had to be put down yesterday. She had really bad arthritis.

New girl

Well, today was sort of strange.

I'm gonna be working with another girl on Fridays. She's an intern. She was originally supposed to work on a different string, but they asked her to change her schedule last minute and she couldn't do it. She goes to Diablo Valley Jr. College.

I don't know how I feel about this. I mean, she's really nice and everything. And it's nice to have extra help. But I feel kind of selfish. I don't want to share my experiences with someone else.

Is that bad? I feel bad. But I wish she could go somewhere else and do her own thing. She didn't even choose this string. Originally she chose to work with the primates. So she doesn't even care about the goats and lemurs and pigs, etc. Gah.

I just hope Alan doesn't end up liking her more than me.

Anyway, I did my usual thing, but I stayed in the goat barn the whole day.

Yeah, I'm a little disappointed. But I still love what I'm doing!

Boo hoo

Well, it looks like Limited Too is NOT hiring, but K.B. Toys IS hiring.

So I picked up an application there.

New Prez

So Hillary Clinton won the New Hampshire primary. I'm pretty surprised as I thought Barack Obama would carry on his win from Iowa.

Who do you like? Clinton, Obama, or Edwards? (Or Richardson.) Or maybe you've turned Republican.......????

Actually, I like all the Democratic candidates. I think they all can deliver the changes I want to see.

So, now that I can vote, I don't know who I'll be voting for. My mom likes Hillary, and I don't know who my dad likes.

Also, I don't understand why the media is playing Obama as the more "likeable" candidate. I really think Clinton is just as, or more, likeable than he is. And Edwards is nice, too. Whatever.

Anyway, I'd like to hear your thoughts....

Mua haha ha

My mom and I saw Sweeney Todd yesterday.

Because we had seen the play, we knew exactly what to expect. Singing and blood.

But if you go into this movie not knowing what you're going to see, you're in for an interesting time.

My mom heard a woman in the bathroom say, "I hope they don't sing through the whole movie." Well, it's a musical doofus. And yes, there is singing throughout the whole movie. However, you may not find a "point" to this film, as one woman lamented after coming out of the theater.

Anyway, I thought it was brilliant. Johnny Depp does a great job, and he's a good singer, too.

So I definitely recommend seeing this one!!!

Bernie

Compare these to the lemur pics below.

Lemur pics

Today it poured. Alan said the zoo is closed. Electricity was out everywhere except the Children's Zoo.
So I didn't have to go outside and clean the goat area. But we cleaned inside their stalls.
I also hosed out the lemur night house. It was pretty messy. I chopped up some yams and carrots and put them in the microwave for eight minutes. This is their breakfast.
I'm going to put up some pictures of my cat Bernie, so you can compare him to the lemurs. They remind me of each other.
Chester, the hormonally challenged one, is on the top. If you click on the image, it will become bigger so you can see his uniqueness better. In fact all of them look better if you click on them to enlarge.
------
Today I saw a car with bumper sticker that said "Let it snow!" and also a sticker with a flower that says "Maui." Huh? So do you like snow, or beaches? Or both?
